UNNC exhibits depiction art of the Hemudu culture
In November, an exhibition, themed “childlike artisan” displaying the depiction art of relics unearthed in Hemudu culture, has been made available in the Library of University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). Unique charcoal-tempered pottery, Neolithic horn ornaments, and exquisitely carved ivory artifacts showcased in the exhibition gave the staff and students a glimpse of the treasures that history has given.
“Looking at these cultural relics, especially the traces of textures, I feel like I’ve been brought back to that era. About 7000 years ago, the life of people living in this area of Yangtze River Basin had already reached a certain level called '飯稻羹魚', meaning to take rice and aquatic animals as main food – this is remarkable and broke my original stereotype view,” said a student after viewing the exhibition.
This exhibition, brought about by UNNC and the Hemudu Site Museum, is the first stop of the Museum's campaign of bringing Hemudu culture into campuses and will last until the end of November.
The Hemudu civilisation dates back to 5000-7000 years ago and is one of the major Neolithic cultures in the Yangtze River Basin. The exhibition specially selected 28 of the unearthed works of art and presented their replicas to show the essence of Hemudu culture. In the exhibition hall of the library, there are displays of these primitive cultural relics, including music instruments, weaving tools, delicate artworks and pottery, showing the wisdom and diligence of Hemudu people.
At the same time, the series of activities including research theme lectures, ancient architecture construction and historical and cultural film viewing also allowed the students to experience the brilliance and broadness of Chinese civilisation.
According to Snow Wang, Student Support Advisor at UNNC and organiser of the exhibition, UNNC as a Sino-foreign university not only cultivates the international vision of students, but also attaches great importance to students’ appreciation of traditional culture. As the museum acts as a special classroom where students get the nutrients of history and culture, she hopes that through such university-museum cooperation, the young generation of undergraduate students would have a deeper understanding of the history, social responsibility and establish cultural confidence. Such activities, David commented, also show the profoundness of Chinese culture to international students.
The cooperation between UNNC and the Hemudu Site Museum traces back to June 2020, when a cooperative agreement was signed to co-establish the Centre for Hemudu Cultural Research and Practice. Over the past year, UNNC students have participated in various museum activities including creative cultural product design, exhibition planning and museum-related topical studies.
